Search engine optimization is needed for any type of website. Because many people use web search engines to find things and because stream of free traffic from search engines is always welcome, at least few simple SEO strategies should be applied to any page. However, doing SEO is not enough. Modifying pages or creating backlinks makes no sense unless you can see progress and some effect of SEO.
Rank tracking is a process of monitoring page positions. If you are doing it on a regular basis (e.g. daily) then you can easily spot significant changes in page positions. Such changes can be attributed to SEO activities or search engine algorithm changes. Page position is not the only parameter which should be checked. PageRank and the number of backlinks are also a good indicator of page popularity and SEO activities.
It should be crystal clear that page positions will change. Some smaller fluctuations are normal and happen because of unpredictability of ranking algorithms and because competing pages also change. You should be focused on the long term trend and significant changes. If the SEO strategy is effective then this should be reflected in slow climbing of pages in the search results. You can not expect immediate effect but after some time the number of links should increase and pages should climb to the top. Of course, the ranking itself is already determined when you select keywords and create pages. Off-page SEO can only help to improve ranking positions–it can not do magic.
Tracking page positions manually is possible but this is not a good idea. For each page and for each keyword you would need to check position in Google, count the number of backlinks in the Yahoo’s Site explorer, etc. This can be very time consuming. The best approach is to use dedicated SEO tools that incorporate also page position tracking as the final step of SEO. Another advantage of using such tools is that all the data is stored into a database for later comparison and graphic display. If the page position is displayed as a line for last month you can easily spot when changes occurred. Comparing this data with recent SEO activities you can find out what changes had positive effect and what had no impact on ranking.
Doing SEO is nice but it can be a total waste of time if you can not see any progress. This is why rank tracking is very important. It can confirm that right SEO strategy was applied and can give some hints what else can be done to reach even higher positions.
